Things to do in Daegu — 10 downtown spots, and where to eat next to each

Modern History Alley (Cheongna Hill, Gyesan Cathedral, Yangnyeongsi herbal medicine market) in the morning, Dongseongno and The Hyundai Daegu around lunch, Kim Kwang-seok Street in the afternoon, Suseong Lake at sunset. All of it is downtown, on Line 1/2/3 of the subway.

Gasik has three locations that sit on this route: Dongseongno (1 minute behind The Hyundai Daegu), Samdeok (near Kim Kwang-seok Street, Kyungpook Nat'l Univ. Hospital Station) and Suseong-Beomeo (2 minutes from Beomeo Station, ~10 minutes by car from Suseong Lake). By KTX it is about 1h40 from Seoul and 50 minutes from Busan to Dongdaegu Station; the downtown sights above are 10–20 minutes from the station by subway or taxi, so a day trip works. Come back to Dongdaegu by 21:00 if you want dinner first (last order 21:00).

Local Korean dishes: makchang (grilled pork intestines), ttaro-gukbap (rice and soup served separately), napjak-mandu (flat dumplings), and yaki-udon. For a Western meal in between, Gasik serves oak-smoked hanger steak, shrimp Toowoomba pasta and truffle pizza.

Daegu is Korea's fourth-largest city and works well as a 1-day or overnight stop between Seoul and Busan — compact downtown, three subway lines, and the main sights within 20 minutes of Dongdaegu Station. English signage is common on the subway and at major sights; less so in small restaurants, so places with an English menu are worth noting in advance.

Dongseongno stays busy in the evening (shops, street food, cafés), Suseong Lake has an evening fountain and a lit 2 km loop, and Seomun Market runs a night market. Our kitchens close at 21:00 (last order), so plan dinner before the night walk.

E-World and 83 Tower (rides and observation deck), Daegu Arboretum, and the indoor option of The Hyundai Daegu on hot or rainy days. For meals, our Suseong-Beomeo location has high chairs, building parking and tables for 4–8.

Winter here is cold and dry, so indoor-heavy routes work best: The Hyundai Daegu, the Banwoldang–Jungangno underground shopping arcades, Modern History Alley on a short loop, and Suseong Lake for a brisk walk. All three of our locations are indoor with heating; the Beomeo one is 2 minutes from the subway exit.

Dongseongno is the main shopping street, with The Hyundai Daegu and Daegu Shinsegae (at Dongdaegu Station) as the department stores, plus the Banwoldang and Jungangno underground shopping arcades. Seomun Market is the traditional-market option.
